Allotments
I commuted to work by train everyday for a year. Along my journey I began to look out for the familiar views of the small parks and allotments that remain amongst the urban sprawl.
My first thought about the purpose of allotments was primarily as a place of cultivation, simply for those without gardens. As I started to spend time photographing the allotments and the people on them, they evolved into a place for learning, friendship and for some, escape.
The makeshift sheds, kitchens, and simple structures, built to provide shelter from the elements, seem a rage against the concrete and anonymity of urban high-rise dwelling.
